Formerly of Napoli and Real Madrid, Rafa Benitez might be managing in the English second division next season if Newcastle United fans have their way.
The Spaniard took over at the struggling Premier League club in March, tasked with raising Newcastle out of the relegation zone and making the club as competitive a force in England.
It was never going to be easy, and in the end Benitez couldn't do much to pull Newcastle out of the mire. They were relegated on Wednesday thanks to local rivals Sunderland's 3-0 win over Everton.
A coalition of Magpie fans have come together to petition Benitez to stay on with the club and lead them to an immediate promotion back into the Premier League.
"We speak for the region when we make this plea," read a supporters club open letter published on ChronicleLive. "Everyone is right behind you [Benitez] and we're desperate for you to stay. Please, Rafa, give us the football we deserve."
