I may have been only nine years old when Tecmo Bowl came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, but I knew with every bit of real-world knowledge I had gained to that point in life that it was the most realistic football game that would ever be created by mankind.
My love for the National Football League didn’t really begin until I was nearly 11 years old when the New York Giants upended the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl, but it was Tecmo Bowl that began my love for the game of football.
It was easy to fall in love with the sport through that game. You could pick out of 12 teams (heck, I was nine — I didn’t know there were more than 12 teams anyway), and you could go to town against the computer or against a friend. Ignore the fact that there were only nine players on each side of the ball. Heck, that’s probably why I coach eight-man football now.
For me, the team to pick in Tecmo Bowl was Bo Jackson and the Los Angeles Raiders that were the team of choice in those early years. Bo knows how to break tackles, that’s for sure. Plus, being just a kid, it was awesome to have only four plays to pick from. These days in games like Madden, which are amazing, mind you, the selection can almost be overwhelming for new players.
But new players (and old, ornery players like myself) can rejoice — PRAISE THE GAMING GODS! — because Tecmo Bowl is coming back. And that’s just one of 30 original NES games that will be available on the newly announced Nintendo mini-NES, which will be available beginning Nov. 11.
What other games will be coming, you ask? Well, I’m glad you did, because, frankly, I was going to tell you anyway.
Nintendo announced that the miniature system will come with 30 games pre-installed, and those games will include such sports favorites as Punch-Out!! and Excitebike, as well as non-sports games.
Oh, you care about those, too? Fine — here’s a list (don’t say I’ve never done anything nice for you):

The classic controller that comes with the mini-NES can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on the Wii U or Wii console, according to Nintendo.
The Nintendo Classic Mini: NES Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii console. Simply connect it to a Wii Remote controller to make the experience that much more authentic. Players needn’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress either as each game has multiple suspend points, allowing them to start where they left off at a later time, no passwords needed.
I’m sure that’s easier than it sounds. It won’t matter to me though, because I’ll likely never stop playing Tecmo Bowl, Mario Bros. (the original one, down in the sewers) and NINJA GAIDEN.
So get ready to get your game on come November when you can challenge your older brother to a rematch of all those games he kicked your butt on when you were kids.
