'Fore!' Golf is a stupid passtime. A way of spoiling a good walk and a good mood. So why not put (putt?) up your feet and let the professionals take the strain. The Open Championship is the greatest test of a golfer, this year at Royal Troon, a Links course that is a true test of a golfer. Over the course (geddit?) of four days the best golfers in the world will attempt to navigate that awesome course, and all that the elements can throw.

You can enjoy all the action wherever you are, by watching or listening online. However, this year in the UK for the first time ever The Open golf is not available free-to-air on the BBC, and is instead reserved exclusively for Sky Sports subscribers. Fear not: in this story we explain how to watch The 145th Open Championship for FREE, and how to listen to The 145th Open Championship online. Online, on laptop or PC, or on your smartphone or tablet. Watch an Open Golf live stream.

And remember that you can put anything on your laptop on to your TV - see How to connect a laptop to TV with HDMI and more. On with the show.

The Royal Troon golf course, in Ayrshire, Scotland, will host the 2016 Open between 14 July and July 17. A mighty field of 156 of the best players in the world will set off very early in the morning of Thursday 14 July hoping to replace Zach Johnson as The Open champion.

Four rounds of golf on a Links course in all weathers is hard. So, for all the armchair golf fans, let's see how to watch The Open Championship online from wherever you are.

So, my UK readers. No live BBC coverage of The Open that you can watch from your desk without cost (other than the bandwidth). That's the bad news. The good is that Sky Sports golf coverage is excellent, and the broadcaster is going all in to make its Open coverage a success. And it is offering day one of the Open Golf for free.

The action will be shown live from the first tee off at 6.30am every morning, until the close of play. And, of course, you can access the action via a live stream.

Mindful of the negative reaction of golf fans who have had their sport taken away from them, and determined to attract new viewers, Sky Sports is showed the whole first day of the 2016 Open for free. Slight compensation for the fact that you'll have to be a paying Sky customer to watch the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It was available to watch on NOW TV, and you can still take advantage of this service on a temporary basis if you want to watch the Open. NOW TV is available on 60 devices and platforms, and allows consumers to buy day or week-long passes to Sky Sports instead of having to take out a longer subscription.

So Sky is hoping that watching the first day of Open golf action for free will convince golf fans to buy a pass for the rest of the tournament. Sky Sports NOW TV passes cost £6.99 for a day, £10.99 for a week, and £33.99 per month. So you could live stream the whole tournament for a little over a tenner (watching the first cricket Test Match between England and Pakistan at the same time). Just head over to www.nowtv.com to buy a week pass.

(And if you are in the US? Golf Channel and NBC Sports will be televising 49 and a half hours of live tournament coverage from Royal Troon, with nearly 140 hours of overall coverage. In addition to the traditional coverage, the two networks will showcase three live alternate feeds: marquee groups, featured holes (including the par-3 eighth, famously known as the Postage Stamp), and first-tee action.)

The BBC may no longer be going golf crazy on TV. As a game of lulls, with drama spread out over 72 holes and four days of golf, The Open Championship suits audio coverage. The drama comes across clearly, and the gaps are filled with less serious chatter.

Starting with a previews at 7pm both the night before The Open starts and on Tuesday night, Five Live will provide coverage throughout The Open Championship. Each day from 10am the station will be given over to live commentary and updates, continuing until the close of play.

Open Golf Five Live

You can listen to live radio coverage on 5 Live, either online through TV, smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, or via an actual radio. The best way to listen online is to navigate to the BBC Sport website, or install the BBC Sport app. Then navigate to Live Radio, and select the relevant programming.

Even if you aren't online, for any reason, you can pick up the golf by tuning in to 909 or 693 MW on your radio. The online coverage is limited to the UK and other territories that don't care about golf, for rights reasons. (See also: How to rip a DVD to Windows PC or Mac.)
